…Not By Sight
My family and I just returned from an amazing vacation in the Monterey/Carmel area of California. Having been stationed there as a Defense Language Institute student way back in 1988, this place has always held a special place in our lives.
This year I was excited to use my new drone to capture some amazing coastline footage, especially down at the famous Bixby Bridge in Big Sur. We pulled off Highway One and found the best launch spot for Jerome (yes, I named the drone… “Jerome”). Got him powered up, connected to my phone, checked battery life and it was time to send him out into the Pacific to get the best shot. We can still see him as he moves farther from the coastline and out above the ocean. It wasn’t long before we no longer had visuals on him and we’re only relying on my iPhone screen that displays what the drone camera can see. It was at that time, a bit of panic set in! I have this high dollar piece of equipment somewhere out there; it’s windy with high wind warnings popping up, and the battery level is only good for about 20 minutes.
My initial reaction was to stop filming; what I had was good enough, and let’s bring him back home. It’s the safe thing to do…and it’s also not very rewarding. I decided to trust in the technology, trust in my increasing confidence navigating this guy and let’s send the drone out even further for really special footage. And that’s what happened…and the shot was absolutely incredible capturing the bridge, mountains, rugged coastline, and crashing ocean waves. Wow!
Reflecting on this moment, 2 Corinthians 5:7 came to mind: “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” God has amazing plans and purpose for us that truly manifest themselves when we step out in faith and no longer rely on what we can see right in front of us. Men like Abraham, Noah, Joshua, and King David. I don’t want to just settle. “Now to him who is able to do far more than we can ask, think, or imagine – according to the power working in us.”. Men…take a risk, step up and step out. And be ready to say “Wow!” …look what the Lord has done
